In a similar fashion to its Eastern European neighbors, North Macedonia falls behind when it comes to sex education. Mandatory sex education is far from reality in schools across the country. The rollout of these classes remains partial and is expected to come to completion by 2025, when optional sex education will be made available in all elementary schools. So far, these efforts are actively being opposed and challenged by the Macedonian Orthodox Church.
HERA (Health Education and Research Association) is North Macedonia’s leading NGO working in the field of HIV and sexual and reproductive health and rights. Initially, HERA’s function was to provide improved HIV education and treatment in North Macedonia as well as deliver better care for those diagnosed with HIV.
One of HERA’s core values is championing women’s right to choose and access to safe abortion services.
Surecheck commits itself to promoting inclusive sex education on reproductive health and rights among young people in North Macedonia. Surecheck has entered a partnership with HERA on two projects to provide young people and women with hands-on education trainings and educational sessions held at the Roma youth clinic “I want to know.”
Educational sessions are specifically targeting Roma girls and women (including those working as sex workers), focusing on pregnancy prevention and contraception. Sex education trainings, on the other hand, is offered to young people from secondary schools in Skopje and clients of HERA service delivery points.
Surecheck boosts visibility through various online channels. The partnership is visible on the HERA website and promotional posts for the training and educational sessions shared through HERA social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
