Bulgaria, similar to its counterparts in Eastern Europe, does not provide sex education in schools as a compulsory part of the curriculum. In a 2019 speech, Bulgarian Ombudsman, Maya Manolova revealed only 10% of Bulgarian schools offer sex education classes.
Loveguide is a Bulgarian organisation that focuses on promoting sex education in a comprehensive and positive way. Founded in 2015, Loveguide utilizes a mix of platforms, such as YouTube, and in-person meetings with students across Bulgaria to discuss sex and intimate relationships.
One of Loveguide’s core values is the belief that conversations about sex and relationships should be introduced early on as a preventative measure against accidental pregnancies and the spread of STIs. By educating children and teenagers about relationships, consent and their bodies, Loveguide aims to help young people lead healthier, happier and more fulfilled sexual lives.
With their shared values and passion for educating young people, Surecheck and Loveguide have created a robust programme of sex education classes, which now successfully extends to the entire country.
Surecheck first partnered with Loveguide on a series of comprehensive sex education classes that openly discussed topics such as romantic relationships, boundaries, communication, safe sex and sexual health in 2017. The first wave of classes reached around 2000 kids before being expanded and rolled out throughout the country in the following years. Additionally, Surecheck distributed a booklet to students to provide further information on these topics.
It was created a series of videos, mainly on pregnancy tests, pregnancy and related topics, but also some specific ones like approaching the risks and challenges caused by the pandemic in relation to sex and intimate relationships, reaching thousands of teenagers.
Surecheck helped develop all packs of e-learning lessons being offered to schools as the primary resource of accurate and reliable information about sex for young people.
